Texas Routes
Route 01
Fredericksburg Loop
(Fredericksburg-Hunt-Camp Wood-Bandera-Luckenbach-Fredericksburg)
258 Miles

Please disregard the yellow numbered squares as they don't necessarily mean anything. I had to insert them in my mapping software to force the desired route.

I've ridden this route several times but didn't take any pictures. I'll correct that in about three to four weeks when I ride it again. At that time, I'll transfer this to the "Trips" section with pictures.

This route starts in Fredericksburg, which I usually make my base for Hill Country trips. There are several good motels and bed and breakfast places there, as well as some good restaurants. Follow Hwy. 16 south to Kerrville and turn right (west) on Hwy 27 to Hunt. There's a neat little store in Hunt to stop for a break and a drink. Turn right (northwest) at Hunt onto Hwy. 1340 and follow it to Hwy. 41.

Turn left (west) on Hwy. 41 and go west to Hwy. 335. This is a neat little road which eventually follows the Nueces River. Stay on this road until you reach Camp Wood where you'll turn left (east) on Hwy. 337.

Now it gets really fun. Hwy. 337 may be the best motorcycle road in Texas. Have fun and follow it to Medina where you'll turn right (south) on Hwy. 16 and follow it to Bandera.

You'll want to stop in Bandera and look around. It calls itself the "Cowboy Capital of the World". Check out the Silver Dollar saloon, the oldest continuously operating honkytonk in Texas. After a break there, continue on Hwy 16 and turn left (northeast) on Hwy. 46 to Boerne.

It's kinda trickey here, follow Hwy. 46 until you can turn left (north) on Hwy. 87 which goes right thru the middle of town angling to the northwest. Just on the outskirts watch for Hwy. 1376 and turn right (north) on it.

Follow Hwy. 1376 until you get to Sisterdale where you can stop at the little store there and take a break. This store has an old bar in it imported from Germany. It really has some neat, intricate wood work. Continue north on Hwy. 1376 and keep your eyes open for a sign indicating Luckenbach. The town is not actually on the Hwy., so you have to be watchful. You have to stop in Luckenbach where "Everybody's Somebody".

After looking around there, continue on Hwy. 1376 until it dead-ends into Hwy. 290 which you turn left (west) on and follow it back to Fredericksburg.

That's the end of the loop and your done for the day. Go eat at Friedhiem's Bavarian Inn for some super German food.

I didn't point out eveything on this route. You might want to stop near Vanderpool and see the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum. It's about 4 miles north of Vanderpool on Hwy. 187. A little further north on Hwy. 187 is Lost Maples State Natural Area. As it's name implies, it has an uncommon concentration of maple trees in the middle of Texas.

Hope you get a chance to enjoy this loop. I think it's best if you can plan it for the middle of April because the wildflowers are in bloom. The hills are really pretty at that time of year.
