Steamboat Springs, Colorado to Boulder, Colorado

Route for Day Eight. This route was originally going to take us through Rocky Mountain National Park and then down to Leadville. However we had to change our plans at Estes Park. Two things: one, it was raining and the attendent at the service station where we stopped called a park ranger who said it was snowing in the higher altitudes and advised that motorcycles not attempt it. Second, we discovered a problem with Mark's rear tire which you'll see later. So, we decided to limp in to Boulder where we could find a dealer.

We stayed at the ski resort area of Steamboat Springs. It was a nice morning, but it still looked like rain.

This is one of the ski runs that could be seen from our hotel.

Looking east the clouds are pretty thick.
This was a great road, too bad it was wet.
Hwy 14 north to Walden. We took off our rain gear for a while.

Looking north on the main street in Walden.

Hwy 14 between Walden and Fort Collins (Cache la Poudre Canyon) is by far the best road we encountered. Unfortunately, it was wet and we didn't really get to enjoy it. We're going back to try again next year.

Here we're just getting into the good part and it's about to start raining.
This is really pretty country and a super nice road.

The Cache la Poudre River.
The rain was patchy, so you never knew what was around the next turn.

A neat old wooden bridge across the river.

Here's Mark's tire problem I mentioned earlier. Boulder was the nearest town with a motorcycle dealer. It was about 36 miles south. We decided to go there because he had to get a new one soon.
This is looking directly at Rocky Mountain NP. On a clear day you can see the mountains very easily.
Another attempt to see the mountains, but the clouds are just too thick. This is the last picture of the day. We had to get to Boulder to get Mark a new tire. We got to Colorado Powersports, a multi franchise dealer at about 4:00 and they were kind enough to install it that afternoon.
