| This is the first non-motorcycle trip I've added to this site. My son, Mark and I usually take a bike trip over the Memorial Day weekend, but this year he had to go to the wedding of a long time friend. So, since I never take my wife anywhere, I decided we would take a little trip in the car since she has no desire to ride on the bike. Neither of us had ever been to Palo Duro Canyon although I've been through Amarillo numerous times and never took the 30 detour to see the place. We decided to take a couple of days and see Palo Duro and catch Caprock Canyon on the way back home. I've included the routes we drove and a few pictures we took during the trip. It would be a good motorcycle trip, but my advice would be to do it earlier in the spring or the fall when it's not so hot. There's some spectacular scenery once you get to the park. It's hard to believe this place exists when you consider the landscape around it which is just flat country.

This is the route on Saturday. There's not much to see on this route. We did stop in Archer City on the way. It has some significance which I'll get to later.

The old movie theater in Archer City, TX. For those of you as old as I, you saw this in the movie, The Last Picture Show, released in 1971 directed by Peter Bogdanovich and starring Timothy Bottoms, Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd. This movie was adapted from a book written by Larry McMurtry who is also the author of Lonsome Dove and currently lives here in Archer City.

This bookstore is actually owned by Larry McMurtry. Here's some additional information about him and another picture of this same bookstore, Larry McMurtry. This was the last picture I took for the day. On to Amarillo.
